I always like to read the National Geographic. In July's issue from 2006 is an article about Queen anne's Revenge. This is the sunken shipwreck of Black Beard. On that ship where alot of foundings from cannon balls to other small stuff and 24 canons.
The Cannon's and the other artifacts, got cleaned and stored in the Archeological Conservation Laboratory. Its Amazing what emotion the pictures have that were taken from all this stuff. One of the cannon's was hanging on a chain with behind it a green wall. Smashed with water. Light came from different area's. I was so amazed by the photographs that i wanted to model my own version of this canon.
Not ultra-real, but real enough to give a good feeling about the whole piece.

With that picture next to me and in my mind i had to find a solution to get the textures inside my computer from the magazine. After scanning these parts in without working, cause a scan gives you nothing more than dots when zoomed in, i had to realise that a better way to get what i wanted it to do everything myself, by using own photography or get some good reference material from the internet. It became a mix of both.
Moddeling the stones underneath the cannon was qiet hard. At first the thought of zbrush came up, but going this far into the project was never my intention. Making it all in 3D and wrap the texture around it was enough for this project. Actualy it was more a small study if i could pull it off to make a cool looking cannon. At the end i could make this piece as good as wanted, and that is always a good thing. You can also see this picture more as an item presentation than a whole scene with the " Wow " factor. Its what it is. A Sample from the Queen Anne's Revenge Archeological Conservation Laboratory.
